What is “Deep Cleaning”?
Deep cleaning is a much more comprehensive procedure than a simple cleaning of the teeth, which mainly removes bacteria on the visible part of the teeth above the gumline. A deep cleaning involves thorough removal of the accumulated bacterial deposits lying both above and well below the gumline. It is the bacteria resting below the gumline that are causing the infection known as periodontal (gum) disease.
Our hygienist performs gentle, thorough deep cleanings to thoroughly remove the bacterial accumulations that cause gum disease. This often eliminates the need for more invasive procedures, such as periodontal surgery.
How deep cleaning works
Deep cleaning is also known as scaling and root planing.
Scaling is the action of removing plaque (a sticky film of bacteria) and calculus (hardened accumulations of plaque) from the tooth surfaces above and below the gumline. We use an ultrasonic scaler to gently and thoroughly remove these deposits. Ultrasonic scalers generate high-speed vibrations which break up and dislodge deposits while simultaneously shattering the cell walls of the bacteria and killing them. Ultrasonic scalers are gentler on the teeth and more comfortable for patients.
Root planing is the action of taking a special instrument and smoothening out any rough surfaces, abrasions, small pits and residual calculus on the roots of the teeth. For effective gum disease treatment, it is vital that the root surfaces are made smooth. Smooth surfaces make it easy for the gums to reattach to the tooth, and difficult for new bacteria to lodge.
Antibacterial and antibiotic therapy for enhanced disinfection
As needed, we may use an antibacterial rinse on your teeth and gums as an additional treatment to wipe out any possible bacteria remaining after scaling and root planing. We also have the option of applying a time-released topical antibiotic which works over a ten day period. For severe infections, we may prescribe an appropriate oral antibiotic to attack the disease-causing bacteria through the bloodstream.
Who Can Receive a Deep Cleaning?
Our expert deep cleanings are available as a service to anyone with gum disease, even if it is only in a beginning stage. The earlier the infection is caught and reversed, the better. For cases of moderate and sometimes even severe gum disease, Dr. Anzalone will always start with a full deep cleaning. Depending on your individual circumstances, it may be possible to eliminate the disease with this procedure alone.
Expert Home Oral Care Education
Without good home oral care, even the most expert periodontal treatment can fail. Our hygienist will work closely with you to help you effectively keep your teeth and gums healthy between visits.
She will show you the problem areas of your teeth and gums using a mirror or digital photos taken of the inside of your mouth with our intraoral camera. She will also show you effective brushing and flossing techniques, and recommend cleaning tools to use for the best results.
