The Dangers Of Gum Disease

The earliest stage of gum disease, known as gingivitis, results from an infection caused by plaque buildup around the gum line. The first symptoms are swollen, red, and possibly bleeding gums. At this stage, gum disease is still reversible if treated quickly. But, if left to develop, this common dental issue can evolve into a much more severe condition called periodontitis. Once periodontitis sets in, the gums begin to pull away from the teeth, exposing the roots over time and risking tooth and bone loss!

Fortunately, gum disease is treatable at any stage. But, the longer it’s allowed to develop, the more your teeth and gum health will suffer, and the more expensive and time-consuming the treatments become. That’s why it’s essential to contact our dental office in Monroe at the first sign of gum disease.

Common Gum Disease Symptoms:

  • Red or swollen gums
  • Loose teeth
  • Bad breath or an unpleasant taste in the mouth
  • Sensitive or bleeding gums
  • Receding gums
  • Changes in the way your teeth or dentures bite together
  • Tooth pain, especially when chewing

How We Treat Gum Disease

A Customized Treatment Plan

First, Dr. Anzalone takes a digital, panoramic X-ray of your mouth, including the gums, teeth, and jawbone. This image helps him to determine the exact stage of your gum disease and the extent of its development.

Next, Dr. Ansalone gauges the severity of gum detachment by gently probing the spaces between the gum and teeth. Once completed, he checks your smile for any potentially loose teeth.

Finally, Dr. Anzalone creates a treatment plan customized to address your unique case. The treatment plan includes methods to eradicate the infection, restore function to the gums, and, for severe cases, perform potential follow-up procedures to repair impacted teeth and bone areas.

Deep Cleaning

Deep cleaning (also known as scaling and root planing) is the most common gum disease treatment method. Our experienced hygienist uses an ultrasonic scaler to clean around and below the gum line, reaching as far down as the tooth roots to remove the tartar buildup. Often a single cleaning, in conjunction with proper at-home care, is all it takes to eliminate gum disease.

At-Home Care

After your cleaning, our hygienist will provide you with all the information you need to perform proper at-home oral care. Using intraoral imaging, we’ll show you where your problem areas lie and instruct you on the correct brushing and flossing techniques to prevent gum disease from redeveloping. We will also recommend proper cleaning tools and the best dental care brands to maximize the effectiveness of your at-home oral care routine!

Follow-Up Evaluation

Dr. Anzalone will schedule a follow-up appointment about two weeks after your deep cleaning to reexamine your teeth and gums. During this appointment, he will determine if the healing process has been successful or if further actions are necessary to get your smile back on the right track.

If further action is required, Dr. Anzalone will take the time to explain the next steps and address any questions or concerns you may have.

If your gums are healing and show no signs of infection, we will place you on a schedule for cleaning appointments to preserve your oral health in the future.

Cost of Gum Disease Treatment in Louisiana

The cost of gum disease treatment depends on the severity of the disease, and which parts of the mouth are affected. Fortunately, many US insurance providers cover some or all of the treatment costs. Without insurance, gum disease treatment may cost between $1,000 and $3,000.

Remember, no one can give you an accurate estimate for the cost of dental treatment online or over the phone. The only way to find out the actual cost of your gum disease treatment is by scheduling a consultation at our dental office in Monroe.

If you’re concerned about the cost of your treatment, coordinate with your insurance provider before scheduling a consultation.

Remember…

Gum disease has implications far beyond the smile, as it has provenly been linked to other serious potential health complications throughout the body, such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, osteoporosis, and even certain cancers, while also being common among pregnant women due to fluctuating hormones. It’s necessary to communicate these changes, or any others worth concern, with your dental professional on a regular basis.

Frequently Asked Questions

Gum disease is caused by plaque building up around the gum line when the teeth aren’t brushed and flossed regularly and thoroughly enough to ward off it’s accumulation. However, there are certain external factors like particular medical conditions, medications, and even pregnancy which may increase a patient’s likelihood of infection.

Gingivitis (the earlier stage) infects the gingiva region of the gums and leads to inflammation, bleeding, and sensitivity around the gumline. As time goes on, the plaque buildup will harden into tartar and it’s bacteria will continue to fester away at the integrity of the gums and teeth. Periodontitis is hard to miss, and is usually identified by symptoms such as extreme pain, excessive bleeding, receding gums, tooth decay, and even the formation of pus.

Your most powerful defense is adopting a proper oral care routine at home! This includes thorough brushing twice a day, especially after meals, and flossing at least once as well; ridding your smile of harmful bacteria buildup from daily endeavors. It’s also necessary to participate in routine checkups with a dental professional, as it puts your smile under the watchful eye of a trained individual who may ensure you’re on the right track!
