Minimally Invasive Techniques to Correct Receding Gums

Dr. Anzalone

Dr. Anzalone is a board-certified periodontist, a dental specialist in the treatment of the gums and other tissues surrounding the teeth.

Healthy gums that properly cover the teeth protect them from bacteria, erosive substances, injury and wear. When your gums recede from their natural position, they leave the tooth roots exposed and unprotected. They also make the teeth appear unnaturally long and can make you look older than you are. Gum recession is both a cosmetic and an oral health problem, and it is important to correct it as soon as it is discovered.

Expert gum recession treatment specialist

As a periodontist, Dr. Anzalone is a dental specialist in the treatment of the gums and bone surrounding the teeth, and can expertly restore the natural gumline around your teeth with precise, minimally invasive procedures.

Dr. Anzalone uses advanced materials and technologies to make gum recession treatments comfortable and fast-healing. He is one of the few practitioners in the United States who can deliver the Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique for Gum Recession, a breakthrough procedure that restores proper gum coverage without the need for grafts.

What Causes Gums to Recede?

Below are the main causes of gum recession:

  • Severe gum disease
  • Injury or trauma to the tooth
  • Teeth grinding or clenching
  • Prior insufficient oral care
  • A misaligned bite or crooked teeth
  • Overly aggressive brushing or flossing
  • Prior orthodontic treatment
  • Tobacco products
  • Genetics that cause naturally thin gums

Why treatment of receding gums is important

Exposed tooth roots have heightened sensitivity to heat, cold and sweets. Tooth roots are also softer than enamel and are thus more subject to damage from aggressive brushing, food acids or bacteria.

Exposed roots are additionally more subject to decay, and can become so worn down that they fracture, break or loosen. Thus restoring full gum coverage is vital to preserving your oral health.

The Minimally Invasive Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique for Receding Gums

shieldThe latest innovation for treating receding gums is the Chao Pinhole Surgical Technique, a minimally invasive treatment that requires no grafting and can effectively correct gum recession over your entire mouth in as little as two hours. Dr. Anzalone is one of only a few dental practitioners in the United States who is certified to deliver this breakthrough procedure.

No incisions or sutures are required with the pinhole technique. Instead, Dr. Anzalone makes a tiny entrance point in the gums, about the size of a pinhole, and uses tiny specialized instruments to loosen the gum tissue and reposition it over the exposed tooth roots. There is little to no post-operative discomfort and healing time is usually less than a day.

The Chao Pinhole technique is suitable for certain patients. Dr. Anzalone will be able to tell you if you are a candidate after a full oral exam and evaluation.

Expert, Experienced Gum Grafting Treatment

The pinhole technique is an effective solution for many patients, yet there are certain situations that require traditional gum grafting treatment. When performing gum grafts, Dr. Anzalone takes special measures to make the treatment as comfortable and minimally invasive as possible:

Special growth proteins can be used instead of a graft

Growth ProteinIn certain circumstances, Dr. Anzalone can use a formulation of powerful growth proteins to regenerate new gum tissue, in combination with a gum graft. The proteins help generate strong gum tissue around the tooth roots and make the gums thick enough to provide adequate protection. These proteins also significantly reduce any post-treatment discomfort from the gum graft surgery.

Dissolvable sutures

Dr. Anzalone uses dissolvable sutures in all surgical procedures. These are biocompatible and dissolve on their  own over time, so that you do not need to come back for a second appointment to have your sutures removed.

Your Comfort is Our Top Priority

Keeping Patients Comfortable

Our friendly staff will keep you comfortable during your treatment.

Your comfort is our top priority, and we do everything possible to make your treatment pleasant and stress-free. Before your procedure starts, Dr. Anzalone will thoroughly explain what is going to occur so you know what to expect and can feel at ease with your treatment.

Our injections are very comfortable because we use a special topical anesthetic and two stages of injection so that patients feel little to no sensation.

For added comfort in your dental chair, we provide blankets, pillows and headphones.

Natural-looking results

No matter which procedure is used, your new gums will look completely natural in color, will blend seamlessly with the surrounding tissue and will provide strong protection for your teeth. A restored gumline can also give you a more youthful, aesthetically pleasing smile.
